Frequently Asked Questions

CD & DVD Equipment

Q. What does CD-R stand for?

A. CD-R stands for CD-Recordable. Recordable CDs are WORM (Write Once, Read Multiple) media that work just like standard CDs. The advantage of CD-R over other types of optical media is that you can use the discs with a standard CD player(most home, car, and portable players). The disadvantage is that you can't reuse or erase and rewrite to a disc.(Please see the next Q/A).

Q. What does CD-RW stand for?

A. CD-RW stands for CD-Rewritable allows you to erase discs and reuse them, but the CD-RW media doesn't work in as many CD players as the simpler CD-R format. CD-Rewritable drives are able to write both CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Q. Are CD-Rs and CD-RW discs the the same as normal music CDs?

A. The CDs you buy in a store are pressed from a mold. CD-Rs are burned with a laser. They may look different (often green, gold, or blue instead of silver), they're less tolerant of extreme temperatures and sunlight, and they're more susceptible to physical damage. Whether CD-Rs or pressed CDs last longer is difficult to answer. You can't record on pressed discs.

Q. Can I create new audio and data CDs?

A. You can create CD-ROMs from data on your personal computer, and you can create new audio CDs from anything you can record into a WAV or AIFF sound file. The CDs you produce will play in ordinary CD-ROM drives, and the audio CDs you create will work in your home or car CD player.

Q. Can I write CDs using my CD-ROM drive?

A. Writing to CD-Rs and CD-RWs requires a special drive. You can't write CDs with an ordinary CD-ROM drive.

Q. Can I use a master I create from my personal computer to copy my CDs?

A. Yes, both audio and data CDs made from your personal computer can be duplicated. You can even create audio CDs that are compilations of other audio CDs (perhaps a personal "best of" disc).Bear in mind that most CDs are protected by copyright laws.

Q. How much data can CD-R hold?

A. About 74 minutes of audio, or about 650MB of data. Some CD-R blanks can hold 80 minutes of audio, or about 700MB of data.

Q. Can I copy DVDs with a CD recorder?

A. No. CD and DVD are very different formats, so you can't write DVDs with your CD recorder. You can however copy CDs using your Recordex DVD duplicator.

Q: Can the DVD duplicator copy CDs?

A: They can copy CDs up to 48X speed.

Q: Can the CD & DVD duplicator be set at different speeds?

A: The duplicator can be set to slower recording speeds or simply left in the maximum speed mode.

Q: Can the DVD duplicator copy –R and +R media discs?

A: They can copy DVD-R/DVD-RW, DVD+R/DVD+RW and Double Layer DVD+R/DVD-R

Q: What are the best media?

A: Only the highest quality media should be used for both CD and DVD duplicators – e.g. Kodak PDG, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Mitsui manufacture and control the process of their discs to the highest international standards. Other brands may also be worth considering, but please select your media very carefully.   There are many quality grades and prices of discs in the marketplace and recording quality and results vary greatly based on your choice of media.

Q: Why do some DVD copied discs not play in DVD players?

A: The DVD player may be an older model and does not have the DVD-R or DVD+R format. Most DVD players made within the past 3-5 years should support these formats.

Q: Can the DVD duplicator copy more than 4.7GB?

A: Yes, but only when using special dual layer DVDR media.  All Recordex Digital DVD duplicators support Double or Dual Layer recording.
